Type or Text as part of Design enlarge the possibilities for our design phase to grow more. Giving our self a new aspect to design without using shapes, lines, texture or anything that we have already discussed in last some blogs. Type in itself is a great tool, There are so many ways in which a great layout can be created by using type. As any other element of Design/Art type has its own attributes or qualities. Few you must know already like font-size, font-weight, font-color, Line spacing, spacing between characters(kerning), word spacing, font-alignment(center, left, right, justify), font-style(bold, italic, regular, semi-bold etc).
Things or facts that you can have in your mind while designing something for web or print Design. These things say it very clearly that if you want to collect interest of the viewer, you need to arrange your type/text in a decent way.
1- Pairing of Fonts- Before actually designing you should decide that how many fonts you are going to use in your design, which fonts they will be, in which areas you gonna use them etc. But as masters say, “Less is better”. So Less font variety in design will grab your attention strongly. About pairing fonts in a design, well there will be plenty of choices you gonna get when you will search “best pairings of fonts for web design” but what will be best for you if you are serious about entering into designing, Try random fonts together and see if they are generating great contrast together or they are conflicting each other? you can select font types example from internet like using sans serif and serif fonts together. But experimenting with fonts will give you great details of fonts, types and their contrasting fonts.
2- Font Selection-(classic or trendy)- Font selection is like a fight if you don’t know where to look for it, even though there are collection of free fancy fonts over internet but yet we always feel like that we can not get right font for our Design. Font should be reflecting the subject of your design for example for sports you can use “SF Sports Night” font, for birthdays “KR Birthday Letters” font, for marriage “Adine Kirnberg” font etc. You must also one thing in mind while selecting font that the font you are selecting is just a trendy font or its a classic font. If you designing for a website than the trend of the particular font might go away but classic fonts always look great. So if it is for a time period than its great to have a trendy fonts in your design. Below are example Design i have created to show you the type selection for design.
3- Using Type as image– Type can be used as a shape, a big bulky sized font can be used to create emphasis point in a Design. It can be simply used by rasterize type in Photoshop if you want. In print design also, you may have seen those big letters grabbing attention while other content text is simply lying there.
4- Using single Font- When trying to use single font and trying to design something great out of it what are your options that you can use? Same font with different color, with different styling or different size. There are many example of logos and design which have used only single font but variations in color and style made it very contrasting and eye catching. Try doing experiment on a single font and see what can you get out of it.
