We all have different working styles, talents, knowledge set But there is one thing upon we all can agree, that to be successful you need skills and to be the same for coming time we all need to work on them on regular basis. So there are reasons that why there is a necessity of keep updating, improving skill set you have and need to obtain new ones.
1- You are at your own- This point could be taken as a universal truth kind of thing, but for this time i am writing this for those who tend to start their own work as they see it less worthy to work for someone else. There is no harm in choosing a path to become an entrepreneur but wait there are risks in that and i am not talking about failing or financial risk. I am talking about risk of losing control of yourself, becoming your own master is the best thing could happen to anyone but at the same time becoming a bad master is worst thing that could happen to anyone. So be ready when you are taking full control of yourself because it is time we are talking about and time could be easily fooled. So manage your time accordingly.
2- Add new kind of task to your cart- Your working profiles, this is what makes you good at something but also add some bad things in your habits of learning. My own experience of staying in a company for a long time like 5 years and later coming out with some limited skills set. But it does not make me the most desirable person for any employer. Second scenario could be that the current skill set you possess might not be important in future, scope of these skills could be for a limited time in a limited domain. So instead of just working on one kind of stuff we should put our initiation in new kind of task that could enhance our knowledge and understanding.
3- Tend to increase your professional (work) value- stability in any company what every company want out of every employee in their company because old employee have better understanding of work flow and better execution speed of working. But what is good from your perspective? Stability could be good for you but at same job profile it is not a good at all. How you going to get a better opportunity? It is simple, by adding new skills to your set. You could join a course related to the profile that you looking for in your company and a certification could be very helpful. It increases your worth as an employee.
4- Go with trend and stay up to date- This is going to sound funny but every employer like one who can climb tree like a monkey, swim like fish and many more qualities. In today’s world life and it is surrounding changing so fast that there is always need to keep updating knowledge set and learn new things with it. So go with trend, browse internet search for latest tech, programming languages if you are developer/programmer. If you don’t go with updated skills set you would still be there but worth of your skills will go down and one day who knows your skills no more needed in your current domain you are working in.
5- Be master of something, but always have some additional skills with you- You are good at something, may be you are best something but only that one thing always going to be there for you survive in this robust corporate world. If I am very good at Photoshop in web design and it makes me worth of a good pay and respective position in company but with latest website building tools coming online, layout design for web design would not be that big deal in future. So it would be good for me if I have additional skills including HTML, CSS, JavaScript etc. It would give me an option to carry on with my career in designing domain.
6- Your unknown talent could be recognized – Lots and lots of guys are out there who are not qualified enough to get a job role but they are pretty good at those things but not experienced. What could be done? Have you heard someone saying, “After 2 years in current role as team leader, I will do my MBA“. Why is that, think for yourself for a minute. Got answers, for getting notified for the management level position for which he has potential but not qualified. Only your talent can take you to higher places but to get recognized with your talents you need some things what is called qualifications in corporate world.
7- Go high and on each step be better than previous stage- Improvements are great ways to see that you are actually growing not by only means of position but also by your current level of skill set. Every employer respects the employees who show improvement in their knowledge and are moving forward. These kinds of employees are most loved to work with.
8- Reward yourself, don’t just lose yourself in way of learning – Learning is not just process of going under some kind of training and keeps working on them. When you work on something, when you start learning something than what I think that you should get feel of achievement and your every achievement should be celebrated. When you actually build something out what you have learned, it is like a reward and gives you great feel of achievement. That’s why I chose Designing because on every step of learning it gives me feel of achievement.
