Overview & terminology

This plugin lets a customer request a return or exchange for items on their order, or cancel the order outright, and lets you review and act on each request from WooCommerce’s own order screen.

RMAReturn Merchandise Authorization — the request/approval workflow as a whole.

ReturnThe customer sends a product back, typically for a refund or store coupon.

ExchangeThe customer swaps a product for a different one; a new linked order is created for it.

Guest requestA non-logged-in customer acting on an order via order number + billing email.

Installation & activation

Uploading and activating a plugin works the same way for every WordPress plugin — if you haven’t done this before, see our general guide: How to install plugins in WordPress. The only thing to confirm here is that WooCommerce is already installed and active before you activate this plugin.

Activation automatically creates a “Return/Exchange Request” page (used for guest requests) and this plugin’s three internal tracking tables. Once active, find its settings under WooCommerce → Settings → Return & Exchange.

Settings reference

Settings are grouped into four sections under the Return & Exchange tab. Each section saves independently with its own Save changes button.

Settings

Setting	What it does
Enable Return/Exchange	Master switch. Off hides the entire feature regardless of the other settings.
Allow Reason	Requires a reason per item, rather than one reason for the whole request.
Cancel Order	Lets customers cancel their own order (only while it’s in a genuinely cancellable status — see Order cancellation below).

Return Products

Setting	What it does
Enable	Turns return requests on specifically.
Manage Stock	Restocks the returned quantity automatically when you accept the request.
Include Shipping Fee	Adds the order’s shipping cost into the calculated return amount.
Max Days for Request	How many days after the order date a return can still be requested.
Minimum Order Amount	Only offer returns on orders at or above this total.
Exclude Categories	Product categories that are never eligible for return, regardless of the per-product setting.
Select Order Status	Which order statuses a customer can request a return from.
Return Note on Product Page	Optional note shown on the product page for return-eligible items.

Exchange Products

The same set of options as Return Products, applied to exchanges instead.

Request Reason

Add the canned reasons (e.g. “Wrong size,” “Item damaged”) that appear in the dropdown on the customer’s request form.

Enabling products for RMA

Return and exchange eligibility is opt-in per product. Open Products → Edit Product → Advanced and check Allow Return and/or Allow Exchange as appropriate.

A product with neither box checked can’t be returned or exchanged, even if nothing else restricts it. If customers report they can’t request a return for something that should qualify, this is the first thing to check.

Category exclusions (set in the tabs above) always override the per-product checkboxes — a product in an excluded category stays ineligible even with both boxes checked.

The customer experience

From My Account → Orders, an eligible order shows Return / Exchange / Cancel actions based on your settings, the order’s age, its total, and its current status. Choosing Return or Exchange opens a form listing the order’s items, where the customer picks quantities, a reason, and — for returns — whether they’d like a store coupon or to arrange a manual refund with you.

Submitting creates the request and moves the order to a dedicated status (return-requested, exchange-request, etc.), and sends you an email notification.

Guest requests

Add the [wcrem_guest_user_form] shortcode to any page to let a non-account visitor look up an order by order number and billing email, then act on it the same way a logged-in customer would.

Order cancellation

When enabled, a Cancel action appears on orders in a genuinely cancellable status — matching WooCommerce’s own rule for which statuses are safe to self-cancel (pending or failed by default, filterable via woocommerce_valid_order_statuses_for_cancel like any WooCommerce cancel action). Clicking it cancels the order and returns the customer to their orders list with a confirmation.

Reviewing requests as an admin

Open the order in WooCommerce → Orders. Requested items and their reasons appear under the line items, with Accept / Decline actions. Accepting a return updates stock (if enabled), generates a coupon if the customer chose that option, and emails the customer. Accepting an exchange creates a new linked order for the replacement items.

Compatibility notes

HPOS (High-Performance Order Storage): fully supported, including correct billing/shipping addresses on generated exchange orders.
PHP 8.3: verified clean, no deprecation warnings.
Security: every request-handling form is protected against forged submissions, and an order can only be acted on by the customer it actually belongs to (or a verified guest lookup). Photo attachments are validated by their real file content, not just their filename.

Overview & terminology

Split Order Payment lets a customer divide the cost of a product or an entire order across multiple people, each of whom pays their own share directly through your store. A few terms are used consistently throughout the plugin:

OrganiserThe customer who starts a split and invites others.

ParticipantAnyone invited to pay a share — by email, optionally phone.

Sub-orderThe individual WooCommerce order created for a participant’s own share.

Split modeHow the total divides: equal, custom amount, or percentage.

Requirements

WordPress 3.6 or newer — tested through WordPress 7.1.1.
WooCommerce 6.0.0 or newer — tested through WooCommerce 10.7.0, including both the classic and block-based Cart/Checkout.
Compatible with WooCommerce’s High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS) — no action needed, it’s handled automatically.

Installation & activation

Once activated, a new Split Settings item appears in your WordPress admin menu — open it to configure the plugin using the settings below.

Settings reference

Open Split Settings in your admin menu. Settings are grouped into four tabs; every field saves together with one Save Settings button.

Participant Rules

Setting	Default	What it does
Show Split Option On	Single Product Page	Where the split opt-in appears: a product’s page, or the Cart page for the whole order.
Minimum Order Amount	100	Splitting only appears once the order/product total reaches this amount.

Split Amount Options

Notifications

Allow Organiser Message	Off	Shows a message field so the organiser can add a note to the invitation email.

Reminders & Expiry

Setting	Default	What it does
Send Reminder After (days)	3	Days before an unpaid participant gets an automatic reminder. 0 disables it.
Maximum Reminders to Send	3	Reminders stop after this many have gone out to a participant.
Auto-Cancel Unpaid Splits After (days)	7	Cancels the parent order and notifies the organiser if unpaid by this deadline. 0 disables it.

Extensible by design: if you install an add-on built for Split Order Payment, it can add its own settings tab here automatically — no extra configuration needed on your part.

Running it as a store owner

Enabling a product for splitting

If Show Split Option On is set to Single Product Page, open the product in Products → Edit Product and check the “Allow split Payment” box that appears on the product data panel, shown below. If it’s set to Cart Page, splitting is available cart-wide once the minimum order amount is met — no per-product setup needed.

The Split Payment Dashboard

Under Split Settings → Dashboard, you get a live table of every split in progress: participant emails, amounts, payment status, and reminders sent. From there you can search and filter, manually mark a participant’s share as paid, send reminders (individually or in bulk), and jump straight to the parent order or a participant’s sub-order.

The participant experience

The organiser adds each participant by email (and phone, if required — see below), optionally includes themselves, and chooses how the cost divides. Each participant then receives an invitation and pays their own share through your store’s normal checkout, with a guest able to do so via a secure tokenised link if you’ve allowed it, no account required.

Phone number field: optional by default. It automatically becomes required if you activate an add-on that needs it (such as a WhatsApp notifications integration) — there’s nothing to turn on yourself.

Emails, reminders & expiry

Four emails cover the whole lifecycle of a split, each customisable like any other WooCommerce email under WooCommerce → Settings → Emails:

Invitation — sent to each participant when the split is created.
Reminder — sent automatically to anyone who hasn’t paid yet, on the cadence set in Reminders & Expiry.
Expiry — sent when a split is auto-cancelled after the configured number of days.
Payment complete — sent once every participant has paid, if you’ve turned that on.

WooCommerce also has its own setting for how long an unpaid order holds stock before it’s automatically cancelled — if a participant’s sub-order isn’t paid within that window, WooCommerce cancels it the same way it would any other unpaid order.

Compatibility notes

Classic and block-based Cart/Checkout: as of version 2.4.0, cart-wide splitting works correctly whether your Cart page uses the classic [woocommerce_cart] shortcode or WooCommerce’s newer Cart block. Product-page splitting and the Checkout page already worked with both.
HPOS (High-Performance Order Storage): fully supported — all order data goes through WooCommerce’s own order API.
WooCommerce Bookings: bookable products can be split the same way as regular products.
Auto-charging a participant’s remaining balance (via Pay On Behalf) currently works with the Stripe gateway; participants on other gateways pay normally through checkout.

Verified — version 2.4.0

Now works with WooCommerce’s block-based Cart

Here’s what was actually tested and screenshotted, side by side with the classic Cart it’s changing nothing about:

Regression check — the classic Cart page’s split form still renders exactly as before.

New: block Cart — 3 participants, live “each pays $15.00”, recomputed via the Store API in real time.

Scope check — the block Checkout page: no trace of the panel, exactly as designed.

Tested with real, headless-browser automation (Playwright) against a live install — participants were actually added and removed and the price change was confirmed through the Store API’s own cart response, not just visually.
